What material does Wired Up use to make each piece of jewelry?
We use sterling silver and 14kt gold filled jeweler’s wire. Gold jeweler’s wire comes in many different forms; however, the most popular are solid gold, gold filled, and gold plated. It is important to know the difference when you buy any type of gold jewelry.
Solid Gold: By US standards, is an item that is at least 10K gold all the way through. 24kt gold is considered all the way through solid gold; although 18K, 14K, or anything down to 10K contains other metals it is still called “solid gold.” This is the most expensive way to go because it does not tarnish, rust or stain your skin.
Gold Plated: A base metal, usually copper, coated with a microscopic layer of real gold. Thickness of the real gold depends on the supplier. Must suppliers use between 1 millionth to 1 thousandth of an inch of gold on their plated items. Since it is so thin, the gold usually wears away due to salt and everyday elements. Gold plated jewelry tends to be the least expensive way to go.
Gold Filled: A layer of solid gold which is heated and pressure bonded to the outside of a base metal (usually silver or brass alloy and gold in color) thus making it tarnish-resistant. The value of gold filled is greater then gold plated because the gold filled is an actual layer of karat gold, in our case its 14kt gold. This allows our customers to enjoy the rich look of gold at the fraction of the cost.
*All of the gold filled products we offer meet federal standards for quality and content.*
